Both questions can be solved with one answer—While the deck is mostly black, there are a couple red. There’s a red card (Aspect of the Phoenix) that costs two life and only two or three mana, and it’ll return your top creature card from the graveyard directly into play.Just make sure if you get screwed with mana that you have creature cards in line to be discarded first if your hand gets too full.

Every creature in my deck either steals an opposing creature or brings back into play a creature card from my graveyard. Then use this cheap card to bring back Underworld Colossus or Torakal. In the short term, I also loaded the deck with Stolen Soul to prevent them from getting too ahead of me. Well, a good strategy is what gets you a high score. But you’re extremely limited with the starter deck. I would have stuck with it if it felt like I’d unlock the cards fairly quickly, but all I saw ahead of me was tons of grinding.Meteorfall, on the other hand, lets you jump right in and start working on your strategy. There are some extra cards you can unlock for each character, but you can do so very quickly. I put a ton of hours into that game, and probably would have loved Card Crawl without the grind.

I personally don’t see the rage over card crawl. I think because it first launched a few years ago on iOS it was one of the first of its kind without competitors so therefore shone rather bright in a sea where gamers like us were eager to see games of the like. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to have paid a few bucks for card crawl. It was actually my go to game for a plane flight and a week long holiday, playing most evenings. I enjoyed how closed it is (as opposed to open with unlimited card variations which usually attracts the masses). I enjoyed getting used to the decks and interpreting what’s been drawn so far and trying to make micro strategies for how I’d handle what’s to come. There’s plenty of other games you might like such as:Ascension, Dream Quest, night of the full moon, card quest, Royal booty quest (a bad graphic slay the spire clone), star realms, pathfinder adventure card game, and of course lost Portal.Solitairica is one such game that is in some ways similar to card crawl but I believe has so much more depth and thought required.

Check that out if you haven’t already.I loved what I played of Lost Portal it’s a real gem, but like what I’ve already seen you described, aside from the initial struggle of setting out from the start, the game unfolds to be quite easy in later stages. Leads me to be not sure why the dev hasn’t addressed this. The dev is obviously knowledgeable and talented for balancing the early and mid game but what’s up with the later game being a cake walk.
